R. Kelly, behind bars after he was convicted of federal racketeering, has been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to his lawyer.
Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s attorney, told a judge in a letter that her client had contracted the virus, and that COVID-19 is among the reasons why she was delayed in filing post-trial motions in her client’s case, The Chicago Sun Times reported.
In her letter, Bonjean asked a judge for a two-week extension, which would give her until Feb. 17 to file the motions, WLS reported.
Kelly was convicted on federal charges after a five-week trial. His sentencing is set for May, The Chicago Sun Times reported.
Kelly is currently being held at a Brooklyn prison, and his COVID-19 diagnosis interfered with his ability to speak with his lawyer, WLS reported.
Bonjean is the same attorney who helped Bill Cosby overturn his 2018 sex assault conviction in Pennsylvania, Rolling Stone reported.
