TULSA, Okla. — Several local churches gathered on Saturday to hold a blessing of the water and pray for the well-being of Tulsa.
The churches gathered were St. Anthony Orthodox Christian Church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and Holy Apostles Orthodox Church.
The event was held at 1 p.m. at Veterans Park, near E. 11th St. and S. Peoria Ave.
Songs were sang, prayers were said and a cross made out of ice was pushed into the water.
Father George Eber with St. Anthony Orthodox Christian Church said the event was important for children to experience.
“They remember everything. And they grow up with the idea that water is important, that these services are important and all of liturgies the children are in. And so they hear these words about salvation and about how god is merciful and how god is healing, and so they have that as a foundation because it goes to their soul,” he said.
Father Eber also said they’ve been doing the event for nearly 40 years and used to hold it at the Arkansas River.
“We’ve moved over here, this is nicer,” Father Eber said.
Father Eber said the cross started off at 300 pounds and was cut on Saturday night.
