Oklahoma Pet Collective reunites military dog with owner after tragic crash

TULSA, Okla. — The Oklahoma Pet Collective is dedicated to rescuing dogs that are strays or who are about to be euthanized or surrendered.

Sadly, they had a difficult call earlier this week. A vehicle had wrecked, and a dog inside had died. Vice President Colleen Gables says when she approached the wrecked vehicle, she noticed another dog inside.

It was a German Shepherd in great condition. It turns out he was microchipped, and the rescue was able to contact his owner.

Rogue is a rescue dog who’d been missing for around 24 hours. Gables later learned, “he’s served overseas; he’s gone on four tours, and he’s nine years old. He’s been with the U.S. Marine Corps for that whole duration of time.”

She adds, “He’s good at his job, you can tell he is very well-trained and he was a big asset to the Marine Corps.”

Now, Rogue is retired and he’s got a new role. He’s his veteran’s service dog. Gables says, “When they were reunited, it was such a big relief for them both, Rogue started crying and hugging on his owner. Jim speaks to his dog in German; he’s very well-trained and he’s a very brilliant dog.”

The Pet Collective thinks Rogue was lost, and when he smelled trouble, his training kicked in, so he stayed in the vehicle by the dog who had died, waiting for help. Otherwise, they don’t know how he got in there.

It’s a sad story, with a happy reunion and ending.
