TULSA, Okla. — Giant anteaters will soon be on display at the Tulsa Zoo in 2025.

Tulsa Zoo is preparing to break ground on the planned Clayton and Gina Hughes Family Giant Anteater Habitat in the new year.

Giant anteaters are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Their habitats across Central and South America have degraded.

The new exhibit is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025.

“This is an incredibly exciting milestone for Tulsa Zoo as we’ve never housed giant anteaters before,” said Joe Barkowski, Vice President of Animal Conservation and Science.

The exhibit will be located near the Rainforest and will allow guests to have a close-up look at the animals.

The habitat is funded by a donation from the Clayton and Gina Hughes family.

“Our excitement is growing as we approach Tulsa Zoo’s centennial,” Barkowski said. “The Clayton and Gina Hughes Family Giant Anteater Habitat exemplifies our aim to create new and innovative experiences for our guests. With the support of our donors and guests, we’re building a bigger, better Tulsa Zoo for generations to come.
